Backpack Blues
Willow the Owl swooped through the clear, blue sky. It was a cloudless day and she could hear laughter chiming from the playground. She tipped her wings and came in for a smooth landing on the top of the swing set.
Allie the Cat was on one swing and Spunky the Skunk was on another. As Willow arrived she heard Spunky telling Allie all about his new backpack.
“It’s the coolest color blue, and it has these really neat red zippers,” Spunky was explaining. “And I heard it’s the backpack that everyone is going to be carrying this school year.”
Allie looked impressed, but then a little sad. “Well, I can’t afford a new backpack this year. I guess I’m going to be carrying my books in the same sack I had last year, even though it looks a little worn out. And I certainly don’t have neat red zippers, just some loose strings from where I sharpened my claws.”
Just then Willow cleared her throat and Allie and Spunky looked up. They hadn’t noticed her landing, or realized she was listening to their conversation.
Willow looked at Allie and said, “Don’t worry about your backpack. If it still carries books, it will get the job done.”
“But I won’t look as cool as Spunky,” Allie said, glancing at his new blue backpack.
“Allie, remember that real friends don’t judge you by how much money you have, or how much money your parents have,” Willow said. “Real friends don’t care at all about the stuff you have. True friends know it’s what’s on the inside that really counts.”
Spunky and Allie both nodded and started giggling. Suddenly swinging on a sunny afternoon seemed much more important than any old backpack.
Questions for Kids: Have you ever felt like Allie did, jealous of something someone else had that you didn’t have? What did you do to make yourself feel better? What could you do the next time you feel that way?
