Reflections
Spunky the Skunk was looking at his reflection in the pond and he wasn’t liking what he saw. He felt a little pudgy and it was making him depressed. As he thought back to what he had for lunch, he didn’t notice Willow the Owl swooping in for a quiet landing next to him.
“What’s wrong?” Willow asked, surprising Spunky.
“I look at my reflection,” Spunky said with a sigh, “And I just don’t like what I see. I have this black fur with a big white stripe down my back. And then I have these whiskers by my nose. Plus there’s that sweet, sweet perfume I spray when I’m feeling scared. You don’t know what it’s like to have all of that.”
“You’re right Spunky,” Willow nodded, agreeing. “I have grey feathers, and a beak, and I can spin my head all the way around, from front to back.”
Spunky’s mouth dropped open as he watched Willow turn her head from looking straight to the front, to directly behind her.
“Wow, I wish I could do that!” Spunky sighed.
“But don’t you see?” Willow asked. “Those are things that make us unique. If we were all exactly the same, life would be pretty boring. Think of eating the same food every day for every meal. Even if it were your very favorite food, it would get pretty old, pretty fast.”
Spunky licked his lips, briefly thinking about chocolate chip cookies, then he snapped back to attention. “Yah, I know what you mean.”
“You know Spunky,” Willow reminded him, “It’s not what’s on the outside that matters anyway. The most important part of you is what’s on the inside. And I really like that spunky spirit inside of you!” With that, Willow put her wing around Spunky’s shoulder and gave him a hug.
