The Reduce Rap
It was almost sunset and Spunky the Skunk was dragging bags of trash out to the curb. It was one of his chores, one of the chores he liked least of all! This week his family had sacked up three big bags. Spunky was huffing and puffing as he dragged the last bag out, just as Ratta Tat the Rapping Rat came walking by.
“Wow, ever heard of recycling?” Ratta Tat asked, grinning at Spunky and pointing at the heap of garbage.
Spunky shrugged and started to say, why bother. But he got the idea that maybe Ratta Tat was into that sort of thing. “What’s the big deal about recycling?”
Ratta Tat launched into a story about how everyone is responsible for taking care of the planet. He said it all started at home with how much trash each of us throws away. When he was done, he gave Spunky a challenge. “Why don’t you see if you can get your family to start recycling? I’ll even get you a recycling bin and drop it off at your house. Then next week, see if you and your family can cut back to two sacks of trash!”
The Rat started picking through one of Spunky’s overflowing trash bags. “See, here’s some newspaper. That’s easy to recycle. And these glass jars? Why throw them away? Clean them out and use them to organize some of those treasures in your room!”
Spunky agreed and went inside to talk to his parents. One week later, Ratta Tat met him at the curb as Spunky brought out the trash, just one small bag and a big bin full of recycling.
“Wow, Spunky! You had three bags last week and now you’re down to one. That’s great! How’d you do it?”
Spunky grinned and said, “It really wasn’t hard, once we agreed to work on it. We started using cloth napkins instead of paper, and dishrags instead of paper towels. We take reusable sacks to the grocery store. Even these trash bags are biodegradable … that means good for the environment,” Spunky explained.
Hearing that, Ratta Tat started thumping his paw to the beat and rapped for Spunky:
Oh, it’s good to be green
‘Cause it keeps the world clean!
Try it on garbage day,
Count bags you throw away.
Then try it at the store,
Bring your own bag and score!
Keep track of what you waste
And soon you’ll get a taste,
Of why it’s good to be green
‘Cause it keeps the world clean!
With that, Ratta Tat started dancing off down the street while Spunky waved good-bye.
